2 – Integrated Rehabilitation Project of the Mairie School in Rosso, Mauritania

Context and Problematic

Mairie School, founded in 1957, is a historic educational institution in the city of Rosso. Unfortunately, it has not benefited from rehabilitation since its construction. The classrooms are in an advanced state of disrepair, with some closed due to the risk of roof collapse. Additionally, the school suffers from the absence of a water point, and the toilets are unusable. Students must go to the neighborhood every morning to fetch water, creating significant difficulties for schooling.

Project Objective

The main objective of this project is to rehabilitate Mairie School to ensure dignified learning conditions for the neighborhood children.

Specific Objectives

  • Secure the school and renovate sanitary facilities: Construction of a 65-meter boundary wall to secure the school and refurbishment of the toilets to offer proper hygiene conditions.
  • Establish a steering committee: Creation of a monitoring committee to ensure effective school management, identify dropouts, and encourage girls’ education.
  • Utilize the school garden: Strengthen the management of the school garden to generate additional income for funding the school’s educational projects.

Beneficiaries

This project mainly concerns the students of Mairie School. Currently, the school has 223 students, including 128 girls and 95 boys, aged 6 to 12 years, spread across 7 classrooms.

Expected Impact

The project will provide secure and hygienic learning conditions for students. Additionally, the creation of a monitoring committee will contribute to more effective and sustainable school management, while the utilization of the school garden will promote the financial autonomy of the institution.

Funding

This project is funded at 10,500 euros by La Guilde (Microproject Agency), in partnership with the French Development Agency (AFD).
